E’ la più bella chiesa medievale di Arezzo e uno degli esempi più notevoli del romanico in Toscana. Sorta su preesistenze di età antica, per il costituirsi attorno all’anno 1000, del potente Comune di Arezzo, la costruzione venne continuata con inserimento di motivi gotici fino ai primi anni del 1300. I primi documenti che la ricordano sono del 1008 e quindi è da ritenere probabile che la costruzione del tempio sia stata principiata proprio dopo la temuta fine del primo millennio. Essa può considerarsi come la madre veneranda delle chiese di Arezzo. E’ insieme alla cattedrale la chiesa più antica e maestosa di Arezzo. Superbo capolavoro dei secoli XI-XIV, si presenta al visitatore con la magnifica facciata romanica, realizzata con influenze pisano lucchesi. Il ricco portale centrale con rilievi (1216), sormontato da una lunetta con raffigurazione dei Mesi, introduce alla maestosa navata centrale del tempio. L’interno, semplice e severo, è a tre navate, sovrastate da un alto tetto a capriate. Nella grande abside spicca il prezioso polittico di P. Lorenzetti, del 1320. Altre importanti opere sono la Croce dipinta da Margaritone di Arezzo, e il busto di S. Donato, secondo vescovo della città.

It is considered the most beautiful medieval church in Arezzo. It is one of the most remarkable examples of Romanesque architecture in Tuscany. Built upon a preexisting ancient site, the building then develops around the year 1000 due to the growing power of the Comune of the town of Arezzo. The construction of the church went on with addition of some Gothic elements until the beginning of the 14th century. The earliest documents regarding the church go back to the year 1008 so it is likely to assume that the construction of the church had begun soon after the much dreaded end of the year1000. It is considered to be the mother of all the churches in Arezzo. Together with the Cathedral it is the most ancient and solemn church in the town. It is a superb work of art built between the 11th and 14th century. It exihibits its Romanesque façade with some architectural influences from Lucca and Pisa. The richly decorated main portal (1216) is surmounted by a lunette representing the months of the year and it leads to the solemn nave of the church. The inside is simple and stern, divided into three aisles surmounted by a high trussed roof. In the main apse there stands out P.Lorenzetti's polyptych (1320).
